Easy Slow Cooker Turkey Chili
This hearty chili is sweet, smoky and a little spicy! It’s quick and easy with a slow cooker!
Since school is now in session (EEEK!) I am all about easy meals that still taste amazing. This turkey chili makes an appearance every fall and winter and is the epitome of comfort food!
You just need to take a few minutes to saute the ground turkey and onions before you throw it into the slow cooker. If you don’t like turkey you can definitely use ground beef instead. I try to use a mix that has about 10 to 15% fat. You don’t need it to be TOO lean. We aren’t trying for health blogger of the year 😉
Brown 1 lb ground turkey, 1 small onion diced, and 2 minced garlic cloves in a big skillet over medium high heat. Season with salt and pepper to your liking.
Add in all the good stuff now! Put in a 29 oz can tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes, 15 oz can black beans (drained), 15 oz can kidney beans, 15 oz can of diced tomatoes, and a 15 oz can corn (frozen is ok too). Feel free to put additional items in or take them out depending on your preferences. That’s what makes chili so awesome!
Get all of the spices together now: 3 and a half tablespoons chili powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon garlic powder, 1 teaspoon smoked paprika, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar and 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper. You can add more cayenne if you want it spicier. The sugar doesn’t make the chili sweet but balances out the flavors.
Cook in the slow cooker on low for 4-6 hours. If you want to cook it all over the , simmer for 30-45 minutes and then eat!
The great thing about this dish is you can prep it ahead of time before you’re ready to cook it in the slow cooker. It also freezes perfectly–put in a freezer bag or tupperware, thaw overnight and then reheat on the stove.
